What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a phenolic compound that has been found to have strong antioxidant activity. Plants create resveratrol to protect themselves against the effects of poor growing conditions and severe weather. Resveratrol has been shown to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Resveratrol has been in the news quite frequently over the past year sparked by new studies on animals that have shown that resveratrol supplementation has the same beneficial effects on longevity as a restricted-calorie diet -- specifically, up to a 40% increase in life span!

Resveratrol and Health
Numerous studies showing the benefits of moderate red wine consumption on health sparked the research on resveratrol. Red wine differs from white in that it is fermented with the resveratrol-containing grape skins present. This fermentation process imparts the resveratrol (and other anitoxidants in the grape skin) into the finished wine. Early studies suggested that the intake of red wine (and therefore resveratrol) may yield health benefits. Over the past decade, researchers have focused on resveratrol, specifically.
In nature, resveratrol exists in two different isomers, trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol; these prefixes refer to the shape of the molecule. Researchers have identified trans-resveratrol as the biologically active of the two isomers.
